Roof Scare Forces Closure Of Bluewater Pool

After months of closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Bluewater Leisure Centre has been forced to once again close it's pool, due to safety concerns with the pool ceiling.

The ceiling, apart of Bluewater's original construction, had been the subject to small maintenance works over recent months to temporarily fix problems, before an engineers report identified serious concerns.

The report, handed down to council staff on Wednesday night, stated the roof was in that bad a condition, that it could collapse, leaving council with no option other than to close the pool.

Mayor Jason Schram expressed his disappointment over the issue.

"I'm not happy about it at all. I think somebody has dropped the ball over there."

"To my knowledge, they noticed there was a problem up there and they'd be doing a bit of maintenance, fixing it here and there over the course of several months at least. They then had an engineers report that said look, it probably needs replacing. They then got up there yesterday (Wednesday) and said there is every chance it's that bad it could collapse, you're going to have to close the pool for public safety."

Mr Schram said he isn't sure how long the facility will be closed for.

"We've been closed for months. They knew there was a problem, they should've got in there and had a bit of a look. I have to be careful that I'm not overly critical, but to say I'm not happy is a bit of an understatement. We don't know anything about how long it could be closed for. I really don't know. It's been closed for 48 hours. The process now is to get contractors in there as soon as possible to fix the roof. However long that could take is a piece of string."

Council voted at their ordinary council meeting on Wednesday night to set aside $150,000 of federal government funding to fix the roof. All up the repairs are expected to cost around $450,000.
