A 61-year-old local man has sadly lost his life after crashing into a tree at Carpendeit, between Colac and Cobden just after 11 pm.

It’s believed the driver of a Holden Commodore, travelling west on Carpendeit-Bungador Road lost control at a right-hand bend, forcing him off the road, colliding into a tree.

The scene was not reported several hours later, just after 7am Thursday, a passer-by called emergency services immediately after discovering the scene.

Soon after the 11pm incident, Cobden police were called to a single-vehicle accident just after midnight on the Princes Highway between Camperdown and Terang.

Astonishingly, the driver, a 29-year-old Camperdown woman, who was suspected to be on her mobile phone and over the legal blood alcohol limit, as she rolled her car off the road after travelling at about 150km/h, has walked away from the accident scene.

The accident happened near the Darlington Road turn off at Gnotuk, a witness estimated the speed of the car to be at about 150km/h, the sedan rolled a number of times and landed on its roof.

Investigations are continuing.

148 lives have been lost on the road this year compared to 183 this time last year.
