Pen Selling Return For Colac Regional Saleyards

Colac Otway Shire Council will trial a return to pen selling for fat sales at the Colac Regional Saleyards this Thursday.

Chief Executive Peter Brown said Council in partnership with agents determined to trial a return to pen selling this week based on the low level of coronavirus cases in regional Victoria and provided the farming community continued to adhere to COVID restrictions in place at the saleyards.

“Coronavirus cases in regional Victoria are still relatively low, and significantly lower than in metro Melbourne.

“The Colac Agents’ Association approached Council about returning to the pens for fat sales, and Council currently considers this to be low risk as long as anyone who attends adheres to strict social distancing requirements, good hand hygiene is maintained and infection control measures are followed,” Mr Brown said.

“It’s important that people attending the sales do not become complacent for the safety of staff, buyers and agents, and protection of the livestock industry as a whole.

“Current COVID measures in place at the saleyards require all visitors to sign in at the office and we ask that only professional buyers and genuine private buyers attend the sale.

“Sales will only commence when those in attendance are the correct 1.5 metre distance apart.

“Re-introduction of pen selling for fat sales will remain subject to COVID restrictions in regional Victorian remaining as they are currently.

“At this stage, store sales will remain in the dairy ring where Council is able to better monitor placement of people and the distances between each seat.

“Council will decide on vendors being permitted to return to the saleyards once we determine the success, or otherwise, of the trial of pen selling for the fat sales goes. We’ll likely review vendors returning to the saleyards after the school holidays are over.”
