Senior Forecaster at the Bureau of Meteorology Chris Arvier said the rainfall bought some incredibly high totals across the south west.

"Very heavy rainfall across parts of southern Victoria, with generally 30-50mm across large parts of southern Vic, but some very heavy totals across the Surf Coast," he said.

The downpour saw more than 100 millimetres fall at Aireys Inlet in just 12 hours, and almost 116 mm between 11am on Monday and 5.30am on Tuesday.

"So extremely heavy falls there, it was the wettest ever 24 hour rainfall total recorded at that station in about 30 years of records," Mr. Arvier said.

Forecasters predicted the rain to ease with a dry and slightly warmer finish to the week across the south west.

"For the majority of the state it's an easing trend," Mr. Arvier said.

"Steadily getting a little bit warmer as we head towards Friday, by then we're looking at just creeping back into the low 20s in southern Victoria," he said.
